There are many folk tales in Matsu, such as the legend of Mazu, the Zhao Dawang of Kunqiu, and the Wangdi Pit, and so on. Each folk tale is related to the geography, history, beliefs, and self-positioning of the place, and through these folk tales, we can understand the develop ment and characteristics of a place in a more interesting way.

In addition to the internet data, Chen Zihan's paper, "A Study of Folk Tales in the Matsu Islands," also used field research to collect many folk tales of various aspects.

However, in addition to the folktales that have been passed down, the recent experiences of local residents and tourists are also collected, so that even if something valuable happened yesterday, it is still a good material to present a contemporary aspect of history. Collecting events that happened on the land of Matsu, whether ancient or contemporary, will allow us to construct the history, geographic characteristics, viewpoints, and identity of the place from the perspective of storytelling, and then, through artistic transformation, to mediate between the land and the people, forming a new connection.

Matsu is the outer island of Taiwan on the Taiwan Strait, 9.25 kilometers from China, with a sub tropical oceanic climate that is close to the continental climate, and a language that is mainly Matsu-Fujian, making it an important strategic point for Taiwan.

How do we recognize a place, its history, its geography, how do we connect with it, and how do we remember our interactions with it?

This project hopes to use folk tales as a starting point for exploring the history and geography of a place, and to collect and fantasize about contemporary experiences to form a link between history and the present day. It is hoped that through the compilation, presentation, and interaction of the fortune sticks, an intermediary can be formed between the people and the place, and that through the project, more thoughts and responses can be triggered about the historical lineage of a place, its humanities, and its nature.

◥Where is Matsu

Matsu, which is an important strategic base for Taiwan and is an outer island of Taiwan on the Taiwan Strait, 9.25 kilometers away from China, belongs to the subtropical oceanic climate close to the continental climate, and the language is mainly Matsu Min Dong. Matsu is located in the Strait of Taiwan, quite close to Fuzhou, China, and was first inhabited in the late Qing Dynasty, and is an important military base for Taiwan. Although it is part of Taiwan's territory, it is very close to China and has more mainland colors. From the traces of the buildings and facilities in Matsu, I found that it is actually a place quite different from Taiwan Island.

After visiting Matsu, I was most impressed by the relationship between the island and the sea. Because goods must be transported by sea cargo ships, prices are similar to those in Taipei City; the people of Matsu pay attention to walruses because boats are an important means of transportation; and travel between islands must be transported by boat. However, due to its proximity to China, military control, and the type of waves, unlike Islands of Taiwan, there are very few water sports in Matsu.

My residency was in Xiju, the least developed of the four villages, five islands of Matsu, and it was the first time that an artist had been stationed in Xiju, and the local residents were curious about what we were doing and provided us with a lot of materials.

◥Aim of Residency

This project hopes to use folklore as a starting point for exploring the history and place of a place, and to collect and fantasize about contemporary experiences to form a link between history and the present day. It is hoped that the compilation, display, and interac tion of fortune sticks will form an intermediary between the people and the place, and that through the project ─ "Your Fortune, our Matsu", they will lead to more thoughts and responses to the local historical context, humanity, and nature. By using art as a way to create a connection with the site, we hope that the influence of art will not disappear with the end of the residency, but will penetrate into people's daily lives in different ways.

The historical and strategic location of this place, as well as the landscapes and humanities that derive from it, are of great importance to Taiwan, but are little known. We hope that through art actions, we can become an intermediary between the place and the people, and re-establish their connection and concern.

◥Fortune Sticks in Dialogue with Local History and People Astrology is a way of using history as a mirror for behavior. For astrology, accord ing to the data, we know what month a person was born in and what kind of per sonality he or she is more likely to be inclined to have; for example, in the case of the fortune sticks used in temples in Taiwan, each poem will have a source of a historical story, and we will use those stories as a mirror for the relationship between them as illustrated in the diagram below.
